Climate protection in the company and privately - How to save CO²

Sustainable management has an essential influence on our environment and is therefore an important corporate value for us. From the production of our products to the power supply of our offices, we try to make our company as sustainable as possible and save resources wherever possible. What sustainability means to us and in which areas we are already acting sustainably in order to make our company as environmentally friendly as possible, can be found in this contribution read up.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to do this completely without emissions, because the production and shipping of food causes CO². Despite all the measures we implement to keep our emissions low, we caused almost 279 tonnes of CO² in 2021 alone. This corresponds to...

What can we do to protect our climate despite unavoidable emissions?

This is where carbon offsetting comes into play: the principle is: emissions that cannot be avoided are offset by providing financial support to climate protection projects. Here it is important to work with the right partners, where you know that the money will also arrive there and that the projects bring added value. We have found this partner in ClimatePartner. The climate protection projects offered there demonstrably reduce or avoid greenhouse gases and promote sustainable development in the respective regions.

In this way, the unavoidable emissions are saved again in another place and then one speaks of climate neutrality.

Together with ClimatePartner: We support these projects

To offset the resulting emissions, we have already supported forest conservation projects in Brazil and Papua New Guinea together with ClimatePartner, and most recently a climate protection project in India aimed at installing PV solar modules. India's energy supply is heavily dependent on thermal power plants and fossil fuels, which results in high CO² emissions. In addition, the country has a higher demand for energy than can currently be provided.

The generation of energy from solar cells is considered emission-free, which is essential for the preservation of our earth and counteracting climate catastrophe. In addition, the power of the sun can save about 329,720 tonnes of CO² per year that would otherwise be produced by generating electricity through thermal power plants.

But the energy project also has an impact on the local economy: The construction of the solar power plant not only creates jobs, but also promotes the settlement of companies in the region due to the improved availability of electricity.

Why no regional climate protection?

Greenhouse gas emissions are evenly distributed in the atmosphere and have a residence time of over 120 years. Therefore, it does not matter for the climate where the emissions are caused and where they are saved. In developing and emerging countries, the costs of avoiding CO² are comparatively low and thus economically more efficient than in industrialised countries. In addition, the projects in developing and emerging countries bring other positive contributions, for example new jobs or better health conditions.

And yet we can also do a lot on our doorstep. That is why we have decided on a combined project: For every tonne of CO² offset in India, a subsidy goes to the "Bergwaldprojekt" association, which finances the weeks of work in the Freiburg city forest. The forest maintenance work carried out there promotes deciduous trees and silver firs in the mixed mountain forest. Regular work also includes measures to guide visitors and landscape conservation around the Schauinsland summit.

Climate Neutral: All Just Appearances?

At first glance, the term climate neutrality makes you think that no emissions are caused. However, we cannot live on air and love and the production of food does cause emissions. But if these are offset with a reasonable partner like ClimatePartner, we think it's a good and important thing. Here you will find a list of why you can trust our climate neutral label:

  • We really do take all emissions into account: From heating costs in our offices, employee travel, business trips and office supplies to raw materials, production, packaging and logistics: all of this is factored in. Since some figures cannot be recorded exactly, we add another surcharge.
  • We offset these emissions by supporting a recognised climate project that is certified according to international measures. In this way, emissions can be saved elsewhere.
  • The ClimatePartner "Climate Neutral" label is transparent: Through our ID number and the ClimatePartner tracking, you can here to find out at any time which project we are currently supporting.

Climate protection at home - how to save CO²

But CO² can be saved not only in the company, but also privately with a few small adjustments. The average CO² footprint in Germany is 10.8 Tons. Here are a few tips on what you can do to improve your carbon footprint:

  • Buy regional and seasonal fruit and vegetables
  • less processed food
  • Focus on vegetables and fruit as well as plant-based nutrition
  • Tap water instead of mineral water
  • Secondhand shopping
  • Avoid food waste - Here's how.
  • Bicycle instead of car
  • Form car pools
  • Only heat as much as necessary
  • Buy from sustainable companies, e.g. with us 🙂
  • Avoid waste, especially plastic
  • Save electricity -> How to save electricity when cooking and baking
  • Air dry laundry
  • Use economy shower head / economy tap
  • Washing at low temperatures

Do you have any other ideas? Then share them with us in the comments.

Of course, it is best to cause as few emissions as possible. This is exactly what we want to achieve with our measures. We are continuously optimising our measures. However, it is unfortunately impossible to operate completely emission-free. Here it is important to act and protect the climate, for example by supporting climate projects. And that's exactly what we do with ClimatePartner. Here you can always monitor which projects we are currently supporting. In addition to saving emissions in your company, you can also take action yourself and save CO². Because in the end, the sum of all greenhouse gases produced is decisive for the climate, and every little saving helps!
